Here We Go Magic's latest album 'Pigeons' is out now on Secretly Canadian
We caught up with lead Singer/Songwriter Luke Temple for a quick Q&A
Where does the name come from? What does it mean? I thought of it on the train from New York to New Jersey. Just a nice ring to it that's all.
How has the transition been from working solo to having a band to consider? It is a deeper experience in terms of getting a sound; we are still in the process and probably always will be.
What’s the first element of a song you consider when writing? Or does it vary? The first is usually some little thing on the guitar and then a melody and then lyrics. I consider feeling above all.
I recently read a review that said the new album had a very ‘druggy’ feel to it. Is that something you would agree with? Or intended to set out and create? Drugs help people to be present in a very fractured world, it's a crutch but if our music is to be heard for what it is it needs to be a heightened level of concentration.
Have you been pleased with the response the album has been receiving? I try not to pay attention; I don't think that reviews are a truthful indication of how this record is doing. It’s going to take time to see how this is absorbing into people.
You have a pretty hectic tour schedule coming up, including support with Broken Social Scene. Are you excited about it? Do you enjoy touring or are you more of a studio person?
Both have their place. I am more comfortable in the studio but I am interested becoming a better performer and this band offers that more than any I have been in.
The album feels very dense, intricate and quite ethereal, how easy to you find it to recreate the sonic landscapes in a live capacity? Live we go straight for the throat so to speak. We bypass a lot of the more subtle stuff and fill it in with energy.
Where there are conscious influences/listening habits when writing and making the new record?
CAN, R. Stevie Moore
Are there any new bands that you currently really like? Beach Fossils, The Beets
What are your thoughts on the shifting trends within the digital age and how has it affected you as a band?(If it has)
It’s just what is, I can only do what I know how to do.
What does the future hold for Here We Go Magic? It would be pretty uninteresting if I could answer that question.
